I Am Grateful Yoga Brain Break is now a part of a series of social skills yoga brain breaks that will focus on a variety of social skills that school aged children and adolescents need into adulthood. This one and half page yoga sequence focuses on the many things we can choose to be grateful for each and every day, not just in November or on Thanksgiving Day. Help your children/students practice gratitude all year long with gratitude statements paired with yoga poses like “I am grateful for the rain that falls. Hop or step forward from downward dog. Let arms and head hang loose for rag doll pose” or “I am grateful for the food I eat that grows on trees and vines. Do tree pose. Switch sides”. This yoga sequence begins with taking a few calming balloon breaths and ends building the classroom community by joining hands, naming one more thing each student is grateful for and taking one additional balloon breath as a class.
Yoga, when used as a brain break, helps with classroom management and behaviors giving students the ability to physically move around, expend some energy, notice their feelings in the moment without labeling them as good or bad, as well as calm and activate the brain to increase focus for the remainder of the school day.
The Boardmaker pictures can be easily displayed on an interactive white board or printed and used with a document camera. The pictures are appropriate and accessible for students of varying abilities and across multiple grade levels.
I hope you enjoy this activity again and again with your students,
