Incorporate a yoga brain break into your ELA block, story time, social skills lesson, or anytime your students need to stretch and refocus. Do Unto Otters, A Book About Manners by Laurie Keller is a fun way to teach or review manners and expected behavior in the classroom and in life. It’s a break Back to School story and activity. When Rabbit is concerned about his new neighbors, the Otters, Owl tells him to just treat the the Otters how he would like to be treated. Reenact the story with 2 1/2 pages of yoga poses and breathing exercises while teaching students to calm their bodies and brains while learning the lesson to do unto “otters” as you would have “otters” do unto you.
The Boardmaker pictures can be easily displayed as a screen share, on an interactive white board, document camera, or simply print for a small group. Poses and pictures are appropriate and accessible for students of varying abilities and multiple grade levels.
