Gentle Kindness Yoga: A Social Skills Yoga Brain Break is part of a series of yoga brain breaks that will focus on a variety of social skills that school aged children and adolescents need into adulthood. This brain break is a little over one page sequence and focuses on spreading kindness to others with kindness prompts, like “Think of someone brave. Kneel in lion pose, hands on lap. Inhale. On the exhale, stick out your tongue and ROAR!” or “Spread kindness to your neighbors. Start in easy pose, inhale, twist to the left like a pretzel. Smile at your neighbor, then exhale. Return to center. Inhale, twist to the right, smile, then exhale”. This sequence is a gentle yoga flow, with slow easy poses. It begins and ends with calming breaths.
Yoga, when used as a brain break, can help with classroom management and increase desirable behaviors, giving students the ability to physically move around, expend some energy, notice their feelings in the moment without labeling them as good or bad, as well as calm and activate the brain to increase focus for the remainder of the school day.
The Boardmaker pictures can be easily displayed on an interactive white board or printed and used with a document camera. The pictures are appropriate and accessible for students of varying abilities and across multiple grade levels.
I hope you enjoy this activity again and again with your students/children.
