I Am Special: A Social Skills Yoga Brain Break is part of a series of brain breaks that focus on a variety of social skills that school aged children and adolescents need into adulthood. This one and a half page brain break focuses on positive affirmations that reinforce in children how special they are. The sequence begins and ends with taking several balloon breaths, which are calming and send more oxygen to the brain to increase focus and clarity. Children are instructed to bring to mind something that makes them special. Then, they are encouraged to repeat aloud or to themselves affirmations like, ” I am strong” while doing plank pose, “I can see things from a new perspective” while doing upward dog pose, and “It’s OK to have to try things again. Practice leads to success” while repeating downward dog pose.
Yoga, when used as a brain break, helps with classroom management and behaviors giving students the ability to physically move around, expend some energy, notice their feelings in the moment without labeling them as good or bad, as well as calm and activate the brain to increase focus following the brain break activity.
