My Senses: A Social Skills Brain Break is part of a series of yoga brain breaks that will focus on a variety of social skills that school aged children, especially early elementary-aged students, need as they move through life. This brain break is a one page sequence that guides students through basic yoga poses focusing on the five senses: sound, sight, smell, touch, and taste. Great for a social skills lesson for self and body awareness as well as to reinforce a science lesson on the senses. In addition, all this moving gets oxygen flowing to the brain and increases focus and concentration following this activity. This sequence begins and ends with taking a few deep, calming breaths, It introduces the bumble bee breath which focuses on making a humming noise while slowly “turning off” one sense at a time (close eyes, cover ears).

Yoga, when used as a brain break, can help with classroom management and increased positive behaviors, giving students the ability to physically move around, expend some energy, notice their feelings in the moment without labeling them as good or bad, practice mindfulness, as well as calm and activate the brain to increase focus for the remainder of the school day.

The Boardmaker pictures can be easily displayed on an interactive white board or printed and used with a document camera. The pictures are appropriate and accessible for students of varying abilities and across multiple grade levels.
